Description Ferrofluid

In physics class, it often happened that experiments with magnets were demonstrated. Usually, this involved an old, worn-out horseshoe magnet from the 19th century, which was first electrically charged and then held into a pile of metal shavings.

Yaaawn. How unspectacular!

It's much cooler when you first pulverize a magnet and then dissolve it in water - this creates a so-called ferrofluid, with which you can conduct really exciting experiments on the topic of magnetic fields!

The nano-sized particles in the ferrofluid react very vividly to magnetic fields. The stronger the magnetic field, the more impressive the ferrofluid's response - logically ;) In the article image, you can see the fascinating, spike-like formation the ferrofluid forms even under a relatively weak magnetic field, while in the video, a comparatively strong magnet was used. Epic, isn't it? :) No comparison to the banal metal shavings from physics class that just changed direction...

The experimentation possibilities with ferrofluid are almost limitless. You can always come up with new ways to expose the fluid to one or more magnets; on a glass plate, in a container, vertically or horizontally... whatever you can think of, the result will amaze you :)

A little caution is advised, as the heavy-oil-like consistency of the ferrofluid can quickly lead to messing up both your workspace and your clothes ;)

Get the ferrofluid and spend hours conducting impressive magnetic field experiments! If you are a physics teacher, we strongly encourage you not to bore your students with anachronistic experiments any longer but to truly captivate them with the mysteries of physics using ferrofluid.
