1998: The hacker group "Dead Cow Cult" takes control of numerous Windows '95 computers with the program "BackOrifice" through port "31337".
Why this port specifically?
If you are familiar with the language made up of numbers, symbols, and remaining letters that has been used since the 80s to discuss forbidden topics on the internet, you know that 31337 stands for nothing less than eleet. In short: Elite.
If you then leave out the first E (after all, omitting unnecessary letters is part of the creative process in Leetspeak), you are left with leet. Tada, the secret of the number 1337 and port 31337 is revealed.
