Fossil fuels are scarce and not particularly environmentally friendly. So it's high time we looked for alternatives if we want to continue driving to work every day, even if it's only 5km from home ;)
One option is the classic hydrogen-oxygen fuel cellswhich are used both in our fuel cell car as well as in the H-Racer are realized.
But it gets even more innovative: with the salt water car kit you can build a small car that runs on simple salt water!
How does it work?
The functional principle of the salt water car is based on a magnesium-air battery:
It is sufficient to apply a drop of salt water to the thin magnesium plate (of which the kit contains 4 pieces) and a reaction is set in motion in which the magnesium is oxidized with atmospheric oxygen and salt water. To enable this reaction, an additional activated carbon electrode acts as a catalyst. Electrical energy is released, which is then used to drive the car for about 15 minutes.
When the energy is used up and the car stops, the reaction can be restarted with a drop of salt water.
Each of the 4 enclosed magnesium plates can supply the salt water car with power for 4 hours.
The salt water car kit comes with comprehensive, illustrated instructions that are easy to understand even without any knowledge of English.
The salt water car is a fascinating experiment, not only for children and young people, which shows in a very clear way how easy it is to generate energy in an environmentally friendly way and without leaving any harmful residues.
